LaFlow Reviews’ 2016 Oscar Nominations Predictions

oscars-2015

Here are my predictions for what will be nominated Thursday morning for the Oscars.

Best Picture

spotlight-oscars

The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Carol
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight

Other potential nominees: Brooklyn, Inside Out, Sicario, Straight Outta Compton

The actual number of nominees here could be less than last year but for now we’ll stick to it being eight again.  A lot of higher grossing films will make their way here this year.  It seemed earlier on that Inside Out would be a sure thing in this category but its lack of presence the rest of the season is a bit concerning so holding it out for now.  Either way this will probably in the end be a three way race between The Big Short, The Revenant, and Spotlight for the big win.

Best Director

the-martian-oscars

Alejandro González Iñárritu — The Revenant
Todd Haynes — Carol
Tom McCarthy — Spotlight
Adam McKay — The Big Short
Ridley Scott — The Martian

Other potential nominees: George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road, Steven Spielberg – Bridge of Spies, Denis Villeneuve – Sicario

This one is a pretty simple category.  If anyone is out it will probably be Haynes replaced with Miller.

Best Actor

the-revenant-oscars

Steve Carell — The Big Short
Bryan Cranston — Trumbo
Matt Damon — The Martian
Leonardo DiCaprio — The Revenant
Michael Fassbender — Steve Jobs

Other potential nominees: Eddie Redmayne – The Danish Girl, Will Smith – Concussion

Carell may be the one in jeopardy here but considering the huge wave The Big Short has been riding lately, it seems that only makes Carell’s chances even better at a nomination.  Even then, it’s hard to see anyone over taking DiCaprio in terms of leading the category.

Best Actress

room-oscars

Cate Blanchett — Carol
Brie Larson — Room
Rooney Mara — Carol
Charlotte Rampling — 45 Years
Saoirse Ronan — Brooklyn

Other potential nominees: Jennifer Lawrence – Joy, Alicia Vikander – The Danish Girl, Maggie Smith – The Lady in the Van

Now if the Oscars wants to nominate performances correctly then they should be nominating Rooney Mara for lead in Carol and we’ll predict it here though it is very likely a nomination for her will go supporting.  It shouldn’t as Mara just on screen time alone is higher than Blanchett.  If Mara isn’t in then Lawrence will go in most likely.

Best Supporting Actor

the-big-short-oscars

Christian Bale — The Big Short
Benicio Del Toro — Sicario
Mark Ruffalo — Spotlight
Mark Rylance — Bridge of Spies
Jacob Tremblay — Room

Other potential nominees: Paul Dano – Love & Mercy, Idris Elba – Beast of No Nation, Tom Hardy – The Revenant, Michael Keaton – Spotlight, Michael Shannon – 99 Homes, Sylvester Stallone – Creed

One of the hardest acting categories to predict in some time as the potential is still very wide open for many combinations.  Rylance is probably the only safe best in this category so far.  Technically, Tremblay is a lead character in his film though a supporting nomination here isn’t as fraudulent so hopefully he can secure a nom.  Ruffalo may be out due to split voting with Keaton (or the other males) in Spotlight.  If any of the other nominees get in, then Elba is the first one in there.

Best Supporting Actress

ex-machina-oscars

Jennifer Jason Leigh — The Hateful Eight
Rachel McAdams — Spotlight
Helen Mirren — Trumbo
Alicia Vikander — Ex Machina
Kate Winslet — Steve Jobs

Other potential nominees: Joan Allen- Room, Rooney Mara – Carol, Alicia Vikander – The Danish Girl, Kristen Stewart – Clouds of Sils Maria

Though her role is also technically a lead role in The Danish Girl, Vikander if she gets nominated for that film would appear here.  However, it seems the recent wave Ex Machina is riding might give that film the edge here for her nomination.  If Mara gets nominated here (and she very likely will in the end), then McAdams is out.

Best Original Screenplay

bridge-of-spies-oscar

Bridge of Spies
Ex Machina
The Hateful Eight
Inside Out
Spotlight

Other potential nominees: Sicario, Straight Outta Compton

Perhaps the simplest of the major categories.  Don’t see much in the way of surprises here unless Sicario really breaks out.

Best Adapted Screenplay

carol-oscars

The Big Short
Brooklyn
Carol
Room
Steve Jobs

Other potential nominees: Anomalisa, The Martian, The Revenant

Anomalisa could definitely make a surprise here if it has enough passion votes and The Martian could also cause some mayhem but it’s hard to think which film is out first.  Perhaps it’d be Brooklyn.

Best Animated Feature

inside-out-oscars

Anomalisa
Inside Out
The Peanuts Movie
Shaun the Sheep Movie
When Marine was Here

Other potential nominees: The Good Dinosaur, Minions

Let’s just hope Minions doesn’t appear here.  The final fight for who will win this category will be between Anomalisa and Inside Out.  Though Shaun the Sheep was the best reviewed out of them all.

All remaining nominee predictions…
